The Word of the Lord Will Stand Forever

Isaiah 40:6-8: "A voice says, 'Cry!' And I said, 'What shall I cry?' All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever."
If we hadn't known and accepted the fragility of life prior to Covid-19, we certainly have had to accept it as we move into the tenth month of this virus. In my home state of Texas, there have thus far been more than 1.2 million cases of Covid-19, leading to over 22,000 deaths. Just as Isaiah wrote, "the grass withers, the flower fades." God's creation lives and dies. But, the Word of the Lord never dies, never comes to an end; it stands forever.
Throughout history, many have mocked the Word of God. In 1776, French philosopher Voltaire wrote these words, "One hundred years from my day, there will not be a Bible on earth except one that is looked upon by an antiquarian curiosity-seeker" (God and Man). Ironically, not only is the Bible still the best-selling book in the world today, but just fifty years after Voltaire's death, his very home was used by the Geneva Press to distribute Bibles. "The word of the Lord will stand forever" (Isaiah 40:8).
God will not be mocked. There are still many scoffers today who hold the Word of the Lord in disdain and many others who completely dismiss God's Word. These people and their ideas will fade away while God's truth will remain.
God's Word calls us to be humble, to recognize the fragility of our lives, and to place our trust and hope in the unfailing God and his unfailing Word of truth.
Reflection:
What is your attitude towards God's Word? Is he calling you to humble yourself before him today knowing that you will fade away, but his Word is not only steadfast but is your only way to salvation?
