The Holy Scriptures - Read, Mark, Learn

The Collect for Sunday: "Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Each Sunday we pray the Collect in our Sunday service. This particular Collect happens to be one of my favorites. What a glorious way to start our worship together - declaring that the Scriptures are the bedrock of our worship. The Lord provided the Scriptures to guide and teach us about him and about how to live in his kingdom. These are words meant to comfort us, convict us, challenge us, and guide us.

Paul addressed his mentee, Timothy, with these words about the Holy Scripture: "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Paul encouraged Timothy to honor God's Word as the authoritative word in his life. Beyond that, Paul told Timothy to submit to the Scripture for reproof, correction, and training.

The words of the Lord found in Scripture still contain God's truth and direction for our lives. Is that how we view them? Do we submit to them as our authority or do we read through them with our own agendas? The Collect prays that we would study the depths of the Scriptures so that our lives would be transformed, that the Lord would reign in our hearts, and then that he would be glorified in us and through us.

Reflection:
What is your view of the Holy Scriptures? Is your view in alignment with God's view?
