Confidence in God's Calling

Exodus 6:26-27: "These are the Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said: 'Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt by their hosts.' It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the people of Israel from Egypt, this Moses and this Aaron."
At the beginning of chapter 6, we see the Israelites reject Moses as their leader. While Moses had spoken of God's liberation of the Israelites, they have only experienced increased oppression. This rejection of Moses takes us back to Exodus 2 when Moses intervened between two quarreling Hebrew men. The men asked Moses, "Who made you a prince and a judge over us?" The Lord answers that question here in chapter 6 by providing the genealogy of Moses and Aaron. There is a direct link from Abraham to Moses through Isaac and Jacob. Just as God told Abraham, he raised up Moses to lead his people out of the land of Egypt into the land of promise.
Despite his pedigree, Moses reminds the Lord of his failure and his inability to speak well. If his own people will not accept and listen to him, why then would Pharaoh listen to him? God calls Moses to put his faith not in his abilities or previous actions but the Lord and his covenantal promises to Abraham. In Genesis 15:13, the Lord told Abraham his people would live as servants in a foreign land, but the Lord would lead them out of that land. Trusting in the person of Yahweh and in his covenantal promise, Moses is to surrender to the call to be the leader to the nation of Israel.
Moses, Aaron, Pharaoh and the nations of Israel and Egypt will learn who the Lord is and what his plans of deliverance are for his people. They will see Moses rise up as the leader of Israel; they will see God's mighty acts; and they all will be challenged to acknowledge that the God of the Hebrews is the true God over all things in heaven and earth.
Reflection:
Where do you look for your confidence to fulfill God's calling on your life? Can you look back to see the people God has put in your life to bring you to where you are today? Take a few minutes to thank the Lord for your physical and spiritual genealogy.
