The Lord's Mouthpiece

Exodus 4:15-17: "You shall speak to Aaron and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth and with his mouth and will teach you both what to do. He shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be as God to him. And take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs."

God called Moses to the awesome task of leading his people out of the land of Egypt. Instead of embracing the call, Moses offered up five excuses as to why God had called the wrong man for the job. The last excuse Moses provided was that he was not an eloquent speaker. How in the world could he go before Pharaoh if he was slow of speech? The Lord was done with Moses' excuses. In his mercy, the Lord told Moses that he would send Aaron to him. Aaron would be the mouthpiece for Moses. God gave Moses the assurance that he would have the presence of God and the assistance of Aaron.

The Lord reminded Moses that his calling was not contingent upon his knowledge, or his ability to speak or to lead. It was God who would instruct Moses as to what to say just as Moses would instruct Aaron in what to say. There was an important chain of command with God being the top link - the true leader and equipper.

God chose Moses. He prepared Moses, and he would work in and through Moses. Moses was to be in relationship with this sovereign and omnipotent God. He was to listen, to convey the words of the Lord, and to obey all that God was commanding him to do. It was in relationship and dependency upon the Lord that Moses would become the leader God called him to be.

Reflection:
Do you offer your mouth to be used by the Lord? Do you realize the power of your words? God would like to use you to build up his church, to share his gospel, and to speak his truth. May you become a mouthpiece for the Lord today!
