God's Great Calling

Exodus 3:11-12: "But Moses said to God, 'Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?' God said, 'I will be with you.'"

Yesterday, we saw Moses asserting himself to be the protector of the Hebrew people. Today, we see that his time in the desert humbled him. The Lord revealed himself dramatically to Moses through the burning bush. He called to Moses, declared the place he was standing to be holy ground, and proceeded to let Moses in on his deliverance plans for the nation of Israel. Oh yes, and God told Moses that he would be the one to lead the people.

Moses remembered his previous failure well. He also remembered the power and hardness of Pharaoh. Leading the nation of Israel out of the land of Egypt was no small calling! Moses immediately recognized this calling was far too big for him: "Who am I to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?"

When Moses heard the call of God, he looked at himself and saw all the inadequacies. The Lord called Moses to take his eyes off himself and to look to him: "I will be with you." It was not Moses who would work mighty works; it was the Lord who would stretch out his mighty hand to deliver his people. Moses would be the instrument that God used to lead his people. The value of an instrument is determined by the hand that holds and directs it.

Reflection:
How do you respond to God's call on your life? Do you immediately look to your failure and inadequacies, or do you look to the Lord for the guidance, provision and power needed for the task?
