The Prayers of the People

Psalm 67:1-3: "May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, Oh God; let all the people praise you!"

If there is one thing that we need in the world right now it is the saving power of the Lord. We desperately need to be saved from Covid-19; we also need to be saved from our spiritual blindness and hard-heartedness. We need the saving work of the Lord to reconcile us and to lead us in right relationships with one another. How much do we need to see the Lord's hand in our government to humble and guide our leaders in the way of Truth?

The way forward seems unclear. What is clear to us as believers is that Jesus sits on the throne. He is sovereign over every detail of our lives. He has a plan, and we can be part of that plan. The plan can start with the fervent prayers of his people. The psalmist here models this kind of prayer. Pray for grace, for blessing, and for the revelation of God throughout the world. The prayer is for God's saving power to intervene in our human messes and dilemmas.

May we join our voices with this psalmist. May our heart's greatest desire be for the people to praise the Lord. Let it begin with us today!
