Truly You Are the Son of God

Matthew 14:32-33: "And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, 'Truly you are the Son of God.'"

All throughout Matthew's Gospel there is this question, who is Jesus? Matthew proves by way of genealogy, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the moral quality displayed through overcoming Satan's temptations in the desert, and the ministry of Jesus in teaching, preaching, and healing that Jesus is the rightful King of Israel. Jesus is the fulfillment of all the prophecies. Jesus is the promised Messiah.

At the calming of the storm, the disciples asked: "What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?" (Matt. 9:27). The disciples were eyewitnesses to the miracles; they got to hear the teachings of Jesus in public and private, but they hadn't quite grasped who Jesus was until they saw Jesus walk on the water, Peter walk on the water, and the powerful storm stilled by his rebuke. It was in seeing this demonstration of Jesus' power that they fell to their knees and professed that Jesus truly was the Son of God.

The disciples were in the School of Jesus. He was teaching them about the kingdom of heaven, he was revealing his power and authority to them, and he was allowing them to face challenges with him so that they could learn to look to him for the help they would need throughout their lives and ministries.

How is Jesus building your faith right now? Are you being transformed in your storms because Jesus is with you? Are you making great declarations of faith? Or, are you falling away? Are you doubting because things are hard and life is not going the way you expected or planned? Is your heart towards the Lord growing softer or harder through these storms?

Just as Jesus revealed himself to the disciples on that stormy sea, so he longs to reveal himself to you. Will you look to him, put your faith in him, and declare him to be the Son of God?
